Donate To Japan… Mindfully

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 03:00 AM PDT

It’s sad to say, but opportunists seem to pop out of the woodwork in times of dire need.  They manipulate, cheat, and steal not only from those in need, but from those looking to help as well.

Unfortunately, the recent horrors in Japan are no exception.  Here are some tips to avoid the scammers, courtesy of the FBI and the AARP.

How To Avoid The Donate To Japan Scams:

  • Assume all unsolicited emails are bogus!  Do not click on any links,  To see a charity's website, type its web address into the browser bar yourself.
  • If a charity calls you looking for a donation, don’t just whip out the plastic.  Always ask for printed materials. Even if you have heard of them before.  But remember, just because they mail you information does not necessarily mean they are legitimate! If you request written information be mailed to you and they refuse, they are not legit.  Period.
  • Do not give in to high pressure sales tactics.  This is a sure sign they are calling you from a basement boiler room in Queens.  Hang up, don’t feel bad, and don’t give them a second thought.
  • Do not ever give out your credit card information to anyone who calls YOU.  Tell them you will donate online.  If you call the Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders, different story.  A check through the mail is usually safe, so is paypal.  They will advocate for you if you get ripped off.
  • Beware of “organizations” that mimic legitimate organizations.  Do not give money to “The Bread Kross”.  They will take your money and laugh all the way to their Caribbean bank.
  • Orgs mailing you material are the least likely to be scams, but they are not foolproof. If you are receiving mail from an organization that you have never donated to before, just toss it.  Anyone can buy a mailing list.  It’s really too easy. If a mailing seems genuine and you want to donate, do not send payment to the address on the mailing! Sounds weird, but if you check them out online they will have a mailing address there too.  They will probably even have a paypal donation link.  Anyone can print any address they want on a mailer. It’s too easy to photoshop a legit organization’s crest onto a mailer with a P.O Box.  Sketchy…
  • Avoid (dot)blogspot, (dot)wordpress, Tumblr, or any other free blogging “donation” stations.  Any legit organization has a legit web address.  Free platforms are a hackers paradise.  Avoid the free blogging platforms.

Onto the good stuff.  Legit organizations that have you and the devastated people of Japan close to their heart.  They need your help.  If you can afford to donate, please do so.  Life altering event doesn’t begin to come close to paraphrase the suffering many people are going through right now.

Thank you for your time, keep Japan in your heart and please look to give with your time or in any way you can… They need it.
