I found this video on how to collect a soil sample earlier and had to post it immediately.

This guy gives some awesome pointers on both the benefits of soil testing as well as how to go about it.

Soil testing is a big deal for every gardener/sustainable farmer.  You’ve heard me talk a bit about simple composting and the benefits it brings.  I should have started with soil health…

…But hey, hindsight’s 20/20, eh? :)

Now you can start to see why I love everything about composting (especially straw bale compost)!

As with everything in life, balance is key.  If your soil is out of balance, you are welcoming a host of problems.  Compost helps maintain balance and optimal soil health.  Testing ensures your crops will start healthy, cut pest problems, and keeps the eco-system in check.

After all, who knows what the person who lived on your property before you did to the soil?
