The Future of Drinking Water: Think Outside Bottled Water

A traditional, wasteful bottled water cooler. Hopefully the use of these coolers will decline along with other bottled water products.

The market around water, arguably the most vital resource on the planet, is
experiencing rapid reconfiguration. Internationally, consumers are becoming increasingly
informed of the threats bottled water poses to their health, their environment, and their
pocketbook. In 2008, Americans drank 100 million less gallons of bottled water than in
2007, marking the beginning a since continuous decline in consumption. Municipalities
are taxing bottled water, communities are battling water privatization, and NGO
publications are exposing the facts of bottled water impurity. The paradigm shift away
from bottled water towards more sustainable and cost-effective alternatives has begun.
There are three intrinsic problems of bottled water that catalyzed the transition in
consumer preference that the water industry is witnessing: The high cost, the
environmental waste, and the health hazards. Disclosing these problems will empower
the consumer to rethink the way they drink, to consider better alternatives, to move
beyond bottles.

Cost- With fuel prices on the rise, the transportation of bottled water has become a costly
enterprise to run. The large financial burden of bottling remotely and shipping water
across long distances to the point of consumption is passed off as a price premium to the
consumer. Bottled water can cost up to 10,000 times more than drinking from the tap.

Environmental Waste- Along with price concerns, the bottling and transporting of water
is polluting and resource depleting. Last year alone, the production of bottled water
required the equivalent of 17 million barrels of oil — enough fuel to run 1 million U.S.
cars for a year—and generated more than 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide. Each year,
it is estimated that 50 billion plastic water bottles end up in landfills or as roadside litter,
which take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade. Plus, it requires 3 times as much water to
make a plastic bottle as it does to fill it. Sustainable? Lets do the math.

Health- Recently, the NRDC concluded a four-year study of 103 brands of bottled
water, finding that about 1 in every 3 bottles tested contained levels of contamination -
- including synthetic organic chemicals, bacteria, and arsenic. These results, along with
disclosure on the BPA leaching issue, uproot the image of purity, which the bottled water
companies once paid big marketing dollars to create.

Alternatives to Bottled Water

Once informed, the conscious consumer may seek alternatives to bottled water.

The Venus water cooler is less wasteful than traditional bottled water coolers.

While some turn to tap water, this is not always a viable option in certain polluted areas.
Most popular for the home, are small point-of-use filtration systems that attach to a

faucet and eliminate the need to buy and store packs of bottled water. Recently, these systems have become more sophisticated, less expensive, and have transformed into
larger more powerful units, designed to serve both residential and commercial needs.
One company, Blue Reserve Water, works nationally to promote a new product that has
begun to dramatically change how businesses and homes receive their drinking water.
As manufacturing partners with LG, their stainless steel bottle-less water coolers
combine top of the line water purification technology with the aesthetics and
functionality of a typical 5-gallon water bubbler. The cooler connects to a nearby water
line in a building, similarly to hooking up a refrigerator or coffee brewer. The water then
travels into the cooler, passing through a 9-stage purification system before being stored
in stainless steel reservoirs for on demand use. Still providing instant hot and cold pure
water, the stand-alone point-of-use water cooler effectively eliminates the bottle as well
as the associated inefficiencies of water delivery.
Blue Reserve Water's mission is to bring to market sustainable drinking water
products that make economic sense to the consumer. "By helping a business save money
while cutting down on their carbon footprint, we are basically killing two birds with one
stone." COO, Nick Friedman explains. "there is less of a waste stream, less bills to pay,
yet no sacrifice in quality." The company has grown rapidly, displacing thousands of
plastic bottles through servicing municipalities, businesses, and homes.

The Future of Water: Beyond Bottled Water

The alternatives to bottled water are growing in popularity, carving out an
increasing share in the water industry. In the US, Zenith Intl. reported the number of
bottle-less water coolers to have risen 16% between 2008-2009. Significant growth,
driven by consumer preferences, challenging economic conditions, and the debate over
water availability, will help not only eco-businesses like Blue Reserve Water, but, more
importantly, the world in which we live.
