Simple Straw Bale Compost Method

I have never seen the sense in spending all that money on composting gear when the best methods require a small investment . I just don't have the means to go about my composting efforts in this way... ...But what if I could tell you there was an simple, economical, very helpful alternative at your disposal? The method I use automatically includes something you should be using in any routine you apply: straw bales. You are going to be using bales of straw to build an enclosure around your compost heap. If you don't have some bales laying around they are very economical and a terrific resource that you should invest in anyway. Here is how I make use of the straw to construct a simple compost bin. This is how I form all my heaps: I create a 3-sided enclosure 2 straw bales high on each side that holds all the organic waste you have to throw in. I leave one face open so I can easily turn it every few weeks or so, but you could just as easily make it a 4 sided pen. It is probably best to start out smaller, so 8-12 bales is ideal for you to begin with. Think of this,at the back of the area you want 2-3 bales in a row, stacked 2 layers tall. To the right and left of the front face you should have 2 bales, one bale deep, stacked atop one another. In this way, you can build a sturdy area that serves a multitude of uses. This system is ideal because all at the same time you are adding brown matter to the pile, you are enclosing it so it retains heat and moisture better. Layering your waste has proved to be very effective, but I will talk about that in a second. In time, the bales will decompose along with your kitchen and yard waste; perfect to include in your new straw bale system made from new bales. Add new organic waste to the top of the pile and occasionally turn it every few weeks, mother nature does the rest! Keep in mind that you need to mix your compost, this is imperative as well. A good combination of green and brown waste is crucial to create a good base. The green matter should be the fresh waste from your garden, flowerbeds, or home. Brown matter includes any older and dead garden waste, paper products, sawdust, or old leaves. In place of soil, feel free to add manure or old compost to give your compost an extra boost by increasing the amount of microorganisms and worms to the heap. If you place manure over the top of the heap it helps to keep small animals out as well. If you layer appropriately and involve the types of waste described above, you are on the proper track to a successful compost pile. The next step is to keep the heap nice and moist. You should always keep the pile nice and damp throughout the composting practice. Keeping the heap moist and warm is the single best way to keep the smell at a minimum and enable all the micro-organisms to kick start the composting process. By keeping a warm and moist compost pile, bacteria and worms will break down your organic waste into extremely effective fertilizer. Also, remember to build your straw bale compost heap in a spot where it gets a plentiful amount of sunshine. Heat is as essential as humidity, another reason the straw bale method works so well. Follow these directions and in a few months you can get high quality compost! Just remember; straw bales, layer, heat, moisture. Following these simple steps will produce high potency fertilizer that your garden will thank you for.
